Im a sucker for
good British rock, with the emphasis on the word good
and GARFIELDS BIRTHDAY doesnt let me down. From
the moment it starts, to the last second at 3:09,
this track keeps me involved and tapping my toe, and
most notably, reminding me why I love this style of
music. There may be some that say their sound is from
days gone by, but the old saying "if it
aint broke, why fix it" comes into play
here. I personally dont believe in old and
new... just good and bad... and this track is good!
Id love to see this band play live, as I know
itd be a great fun-filled show.

When he's not running England's fab Pink Hedgehog
label, Simon Felton sings and writes for GARFIELDS
BIRTHDAY. This EP presents a pair of delightful
melodipop originals, with 'The Bastion Of Teenage'
being especially fetching. There's also, of all
things, a TEARS FOR FEARS cover, which works nicely.
This might be hard to track down, but if you dig
melodic guitar pop, it's worth it.

Simon Felton is the man
behind Pink Hedgehog, a small label out of the south
west of England. Simon has been graciously sending me
CDs for some time now and he specializes mainly in
the power pop arena with bands like CHEESE and his
own GARFIELDS BIRTHDAY. Who, by the way, have the
three track Mr Newton EP as its latest
release. The title track sways along with a Britpop
feel that would not be out of place in UK's latest
obsession with the new wave of the new wave of the
new wave save that GARFIELDS BIRTHDAY have been in
the game for longer than a decade. BLUR would
probably be a better reference point. 'The Bastion Of
Teenage' has the BYRDS/BIG STAR ambience you might
expect from TEENAGE FANCLUB whilst the cover of TEARS
FOR FEARS 'Memories Fade' is warmly evocative of the
original's power.

GARFIELDS BIRTHDAY is back
with their first release in quite some time. While it
is only 3 songs, hopefully a new full-length album
will follow, because this is primo power-pop! The
title track, 'Mr. Newton' is pure power-pop
brilliance, catchier than any song deserves to be.
'Memories Fade' has a syncopated rhythm with an
ALARM-like guitar riff. 'The Bastion Of Teenage' has
some damn clever lyrics, which are either social
commentary or sarcastic observations. If this is any
sign of the future of GARFIELDS BIRTHDAY, there place
as the bastion of power-pop is secured. They are one
of the best-kept secrets in the power-pop genre.

In the realm of indie pop
something is stirring and it's GARFIELDS BIRTHDAY.
The title track of this EP evokes memories of middle
England, a sweet piece of middle-fi pop if ever I
heard one. 'The Bastion Of Teenage' threatens to veer
off into Cliff's 'In The Country' at times but
settles for being a pleasant pedestrian pop stroll.
It's the cover of TEARS FOR FEARS 'Memories Fade'
that proves most interesting however, it gives you
visions of EDWYN COLLINS creeping through the
undergrowth before sprinting out from his cover with
a flourish.

Owner of a long
discography, the trio GARFIELDS BIRTHDAY was born in
1995 and is formed by Simon Felton (vocal and bass),
it's brother Shane (guitar and vocal) and the drummer
Adrian Payne. The sound of the band does not leave
doubts: is a power-pop and of the good one, well
touched, with pinches of indie. This EP presents only
three songs - 'Mr. Newton', 'The Bastion Of Teenage'
and 'Memories Fade', by Roland Orzabal of TEARS FOR
FEARS. Previously the record had a special edition of
100 copies, with five songs, released for the German
label Dandyland Records.
The sound of the
band shows that Simon does not only make good work as
head of Pink Hedgehog. The said one knows how to
compose great songs as the two first ones, and still
make a beautiful version of 'Memories Fade'. Recorded
in simple conditions, but with good production, the
record serves as an aperitif to know more of the
career of the band, who has a long discography. It is
enough to go to the site of the group and to confer.

Newton', 'The Bastion Of Teenage' e
'Memories Fade', de Roland Orzabal, dos TEARS FOR
FEARS. Anteriormente o disco teve uma edição

pelo selo alemão Dandyland Records.
O som da banda
